As the President of the Sri Lanka College of Transfusion Physicians for the year 2024, I feel blessed have the opportunity to deliver this message to you. This years’ theme ‘Inspiring Hope Innovatively’ is centrered around the contemperory topics of Transfusion, Transplantation and Cellular Therapies.Cellular therapy (CT) is the transplantation of human cells to replace or repair damaged tissue and/or cells. Cell therapy includes stem cell- and non–stem cell-based, unicellular and multicellular therapies. With new technologies, innovative products, and limitless imagination, many different types of cells may be used as part of a therapy or treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions. Blood trnasfuion is one of the basic forms of tissue transplantation. With the expanding horizons in tissue transplantation and cellular therapies, our role as Transfusion Physicians is evolving into the realm of Transplant Physicians. Sri Lanka has faced many obstacles in the recent years. Despite that our solid organ transplantation program has expanded both in the government sector and private sector. We are proudly stepping into the field of allogenic stem cell transplantation with the commencement of the Sri Lanka Stem Cell Donor Registry (SLSCDR). In this background it is apt for all of us in the transfusion fraternity and the related fields to be equipped with the updated knowledge on Transfusion, Transplantation and Cellular therpies. This session will be a forerunner in implementing the best practices in Transfusion, Transplantation and Cellular therapies in Sri Lanka. Despite the limited resources, we aim to give the best possible service to our patients, in par with the global standards. Newly appointed consultants, fresh out from their training abroad and the post graduate trainees aiming to persue in this career pathway will be our métiers to estblish these new technologies. I wish the Sri Lanka College of Transfusion Physicians all the very best and I sincerely hope that the field of Transfusion medicine will soon evolve into Transplantation medicine, being the harbinger in cellular therapies within Sri Lanka. I take this opptunity to invite all the other Colleges to collaborate with us to give comprehensive care and service to our patients.
